The lesson I selected, “Internet
Safety – Grade Level 3-5” provides goals, an outline for
instruction/discussion, activities, and an online worksheet for teachers to use
when teaching online safety in their classrooms.
The creator of the lesson
is Terri L. Golden, apparently for a class called Integrating and Implementing
Technology800, under the instruction of Dr. Cheryl Ward, Ph. D. Though I am not
sure of Golden’s credentials, the fact that she created the plan under the
instruction of an experienced doctor is encouraging (and the website it came
off of was “.edu”).
The activities follow a
logical order, starting with information that a student should or shouldn’t put
up themselves, then asking them to consider what information others have put
up, then discussing how to interact with people online. The activities and
worksheet provided are somewhat basic, but still useful. The lesson is labeled
as for grades 3-5, which I think is definitely appropriate for the activities,
thought I think the outline itself could be utilized for even older classes if
necessary.
The lesson would work
well in a classroom especially one used to fostering discussion. The lesson
does seem like it would be most effective with a significant amount of
discussion time and question time, so that is a constraint to think of. The
worksheet is to be administered using survey monkey, which is not bad
necessarily, but I don’t think it adds at all to the instruction. The goals of
the lesson are clearly stated and well worth the time. I think for the age
range it is aiming for, the lesson explores the topics to the extent it needs
to. It the lesson were applied to older students it could stand to go more in
depth. I think the lesson could be improved by adding a practical component of
some sort, either having the students make a mock Facebook page with only
appropriate information on it, or having the teacher send out a picture online
to see how fast it is seen by others.
I do think I would use
this lesson as a framework for teaching internet safety in my classroom. I
think it addresses the right topics and has creative ways of approaching them.
I do think, if I were to use it, that I would add different activities or
discussions as I saw fit.
